Causes for Heel Pain

Heel pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  1. Plantar fasciitis: This is a condition where the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes, becomes inflamed. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain.
  2. Achilles tendonitis: This is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It can be caused by overuse or injury.
  3. Heel spur: This is a bony growth that forms on the bottom of the heel bone. Heel spurs can develop as a result of plantar fasciitis.
  4. Bursitis: This is an inflammation of the bursae, which are small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joints. In the heel, bursitis can occur at the back of the heel, where the Achilles tendon attaches.
  5. Stress fracture: This is a small crack or break in a bone that can occur due to repetitive stress or overuse. Stress fractures can occur in the heel bone or other bones in the foot.
  6. Arthritis: Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other types of arthritis can cause heel pain.
  7. Nerve irritation: Irritation or compression of a nerve that runs through the heel can cause pain.
  8. Poor footwear: Shoes that do not provide proper support or that are worn out can contribute to heel pain.
  9. Obesity: Excess weight can put additional pressure on the feet and contribute to heel pain.

Treatment for heel pain will depend on the underlying cause, but may include rest, stretching, physical therapy, orthotics, medication, and in severe cases, surgery. Don't wait and see a Podiatrist before it can lead to surgery.
